It's time to talk about the ships of The Last Jedi, and we don't mean the vehicular kind.
We're talking about the bad romances and sweet flirtations, the canon relationships and the fanfic-only hookups.
SEE ALSO: 'The Last Jedi' has a secret 'Game of Thrones' connectionNever mind that The Last Jedionly ever gets as explicit as a single quick kiss – this movie had enough romantic mojo to keep us rooting for our faves until 2019, when Episode IXwill undoubtedly give us even more fanfiction fodder.
Some of these pairings are canon. Most of them are not. All of them are ones that had us raising an eyebrow and wondering what could be, or might have been. Below, a ranking of the ships of The Last Jedifrom "hmm" to "OMG, OTP."
Disappointingly, our favorite pirate queen didn't get any face time at all with her favorite Wookiee in The Last Jedi. Guess this Force Awakensship will remain docked for another couple of years.
Okay, this isn't really a thing in The Last Jedi, since Poe and Rey don't actually meet until the very end. Even then, they barely exchange words. But hear us out: Poe has major chemistry with, like, every single person he talks to. Why on earth would we expect Rey to be any different?
The Last Jedimay have robbed Maz of the opportunity to climb Chewbacca like a tree, but at least it gave her a steamy bit of backstory. During her chat with the Resistance, she hints that she's got a hookup history with the master codebreaker, played by Justin Theroux – and based on her dreamy reaction, it must've been a good time. Get it, girl.
It's clear these two love each other deeply. Less clear is the nature of that love: Are they destined to be friends or lovers?
Finn seems at least tentatively interested in her (remember in Force Awakenswhen he asked if she had a boyfriend?) and she's his top priority for much of The Last Jedi. However, in both films, Rey's seemed too preoccupied with other stuff to concern herself with dating. Or maybe he's just not her type. Honestly, we'd be fine with them staying buddies and nothing more.
This is one of the only ships that's actually sorta canon in The Last Jedi– Rose saves Finn, tells him she loves him, and then kisses him on the lips, lest there be any lingering confusion about her feelings for him.
Less clear, however, is how he feels about her. It doesn't seem to have occurred to him to see her in thatway, maybe because he's been so busy fretting about Rey. Frankly, it hadn't occurred to us either – throughout their adventure, they read more like BFFs than boyfriend and girlfriend, and even that kiss feels rather chaste.
But look, it's a really rough time for the Resistance. They've been backed into the corner, and are all but extinct. There's not a whole lot for any of them to smile about right now. If a sweet little fling would cheer these two up, we're all for it.
These two can't stand each other, which would probably be a problem IRL. In fiction though, friction can create sparks. Sexy, sexy sparks.
Each of these Dark Side frenemies seems obsessed with domination and submission, so we'll leave it to you to imagine the sort of messed-up power dynamic at play here. Especiallynow that daddySnoke isn't around to keep them in check, and they're at each other's throats more than ever.
Y'know, just your classic tale of boy meets girl, boy mansplains to girl even though she's his commanding officer, boy leads a mutiny against girl by holding her at gunpoint, boy eventually feels a little bad about what he did when he realizes she knew what the hell she was doing all along and she turns out to be a hero who willingly sacrifices herself so that others may live.
It's a terrible idea, is what we're saying.
On the other hand, though, Laura Dern and Oscar Isaac practically crackle in their scenes together. Just watch the intensity coursing between them as he demands information and she coolly dresses him down. And she does later comment to Leia that she likes him (y'know, despite the whole "mutiny at gunpoint" thing), so it's not entirely in our heads. Damnit, we ship it, even if it's wrong.
Leia and Holdo don't get much screentime together in The Last Jedi, but what we do see speaks volumes about the kind of relationship they have. These two clearly share a long history and a lot of affection.
Yes, yes, Leia and Han are our forever OTP, but Leia's friendship with Holdo predates her acquaintance with Han, and Leia and Han seem to have been kind of off-and-on anyway. Who's to say she and Holdo couldn't have hooked up in the meantime?
Worth noting, too, is that Holdo may or may not be canonically queer. In the novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan, a younger Holdo says she likes "a pair of pretty dark eyes," which, come to think of it, describes Leia pretty well. (Leia responds that she herself only likes "humanoid males," but don't let that stop you from wondering if she may have experimented.)
Star Wars, the official franchise, may ship Rey and Finn, but the rest of the world seems way more into StormPilot – i.e., Finn and Poe. Finn basically imprinted on Poe like a duckling the first time he laid eyes on him in The Force Awakens, and Poe seemed to be into it right back. Remember Poe biting his lip when he sees Finn in his jacket? We do, and we are never going to forget it.
Their (b)romance carries over into The Last Jedi. The first three words Poe says about Finn: "Finn? Naked? Leaking?" Poe rushes to help Finn find some clothes, but you can bet that moment launched a million fanfics, and that the vast majority of those involve some variation of the line "Finn, you're getting me all wet."
(And before you scoff that we're reading way too much into what is clearly a totally heterosexual moment between two obviously platonic bros, let us remind you that Rian Johnson is well aware of StormPilot. It seems reasonable to assume he knew exactly what he was doing.)
It doesn't matter how hard these movies try to convince us that Finn is crushing on Rey or Rose – as far as we're concerned, his heart truly lies with Poe. Poe needs someone to give that special ring to, after all.
All right, Reylo shippers, you win.
A Kylo / Rey pairing would be capital-B Bad for about a million reasons. In short: He's a cruel, power-hungry brat who casually invaded her mind in The Force Awakens; she's a fierce warrior with way better things to do than to save the soul of a guy who doesn't even want to be saved.
And yet. AND YET. That tension. It's so thick, you could cut it with a knife. Or a lightsaber.
While these two don't actuallyget together in The Last Jedi, it's hard not to read sex and romance into their connection. It's all doom and desire and forbidden late-night trysts and parental figures who just don't understand. Theirs is a bond so intense and irresistible, they probably think they've invented ... whatever the hell this is. When they talk, the rest of the world disappears.
The very fact that this would never work in any healthy, practical way is part of the appeal. Kylo and Rey are both perfectly in sync (that back-to-back lightsaber battle!) and perfectly at odds (that fundamental difference of opinion about whether or not it's okay to slaughter a bunch of innocent people!). Their union has the inevitable symmetry of destiny: "Dark rises, and light to meet it," as Snoke puts it. It's the kind of bad romance that poets, playwrights, and pop stars have been immortalizing for millennia.
Reylo is the steamiest potential romance we've seen from Star Warssince Ben Solo's parents in the original trilogy, and also the most ill-advised one since Ben Solo's grandparents in the prequel trilogy.
Which is why we can't look away, even as we understand exactly how problematic this relationship would be, both for their galaxy and for ours. The only thing we want more than to see these kids get together is to see them notget together. Or is it the other way around? Are we unable to admit our true feelings because we know that Reylo is just a shortcut to the dark side of the fandom?
We just know, which seems appropriate enough. Kylo Ren isn't the only one being torn in two by a great internal conflict. We feel the same exact way about his bond with Rey.
