A petition that gathered more than 570,In 80 Betten um die Welt000 signatures was not enough to keep Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump away from the UK, it turns out.
SEE ALSO: Even Stephen Hawking can't explain Trump's popularityTrump announced Wednesday that he will attend the official re-opening of the Trump Turnberry golf course and hotel in Ayrshire, Scotland, which was revamped after a £220 million ($317 million) investment.
His visit is expected to take place on June 24, a day after UK voters go to the polls on the European Union referendum.
"Very exciting that one of the great resorts of the world, Turnberry, will be opening today after a massive £200m investment," Trump said.
"I own it and I am very proud of it.
Despite the timing, it looks like Trump has no idea what the word "Brexit" means.
In an interview with Michael Wolff, Trump was asked twice to explain his position on Brexit, but only when the interviewer explained the question was about "the Brits leaving the EU" he said, "I think they should leave".
Trump's controversial statements, such as his call to temporarily ban Muslims entering the U.S., prompted the petition, which advocated for him to be barred for "hate speech."
It was discussed by British MPs in January. There are no plans for David Cameron to meet the Republican candidate during June trip:
