This isn't the first time Twitter and Electoral Commission have teamed up. Ahead of the UK General Election in 2015, reminders to register to vote appeared in Twitter users' timelines.
Registration deadline days have proved important in the past. Over 485,000 applications were made on the deadline day for voting in the General Election in 2015.
“Emoji have become essential in how people communicate every day on Twitter, taking on a language of their own all in the space of 140 characters. So we're excited to give people a new, fun way to have their voices heard ahead of June 23rd," Rob Owers, Head of News, Government and Regional Partnerships, Twitter UK said in a statement.

“The #EURef is one of the biggest decisions UK voters have been asked to make in decades, so we're keen to ensure people make the most of the live, global conversation unfolding on Twitter to inform their decision," Owers continued.
Once the deadline has passed, a new emoji will go live on 8 June, and a neon ballot box emoji will appear when users post the hashtag #EURef.
