During Monday's presidential debate, word spread quickly that tweets were being deleted from Donald Trump's Twitter account.

The tweets in question contradicted a contentious point between Hillary Clinton and Trump during the debate. Clinton claimed that Trump had at one time claimed that global warming was a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese; Trump said he never did that.
Tweets on his account showed that he did claim that back in 2012. The tweet is still up.

That did not stop a rumor from quickly spreading across Twitter about tweets disappearing from Trump's timeline concerning his claims about China and global warming.
Owing to the power of the platform, it appeared that just one user sparked the rumor. The tweet came from NPR writer Juan Vidal, who later deleted the claim but indicated in conversation that he had encountered the screenshot had been real.
