The Dear Utol (2025): WEEK 5 HIGHLIGHTS Episode 29year is 2017. Moonlightis Best Picture and Disney cartoons have innocent glimpses of same-sex couples. All is well. Well, for these two things, anyway.
Star vs. the Forces of Evilairs on Disney XD, and is only the second show in Disney's history to be created by a woman, the first being 1997's Pepper Ann.
SEE ALSO: Please: You can come out as gay, you can't 'come out' as conservativeIn "Just Friends, Season 2, episode 39, the main characters attend a concert where they're serenaded by a charismatic boy band. Everyone in the audience is overwhelmed by the sheer romance of the song "Just Friends" and they start kissing.
In the background, around 1:29, you can see two male-appearing characters participate in the appropriate-for-kids love fest.
In a later scene, there's a number of couples surrounding the main characters, at least one of which is a female same-sex couple:
This episode marks the first-ever same-sex kiss in a Disney cartoon, though Disney has made strides towards increased inclusivity in the past by including a same-sex couple in Gravity Falls, as well as same-sex parents in Good Luck Charlie.
As long as we're pointing out the LBGTQ couple, it's worth noting the range of diversity included in the kissing montage as well! Good job, Disney XD!!
Animators clearly made an thoughtful effort to represent people from a lot of different backgrounds, and it seems that the animated division of Disney is going to be on the forefront of diversity on the network, at least for now.
