If you snagged a pre-order reservation for the iPhone X this morning,Cat 3 movies a quick word of advice: be extra careful with that shiny new OLED screen once you finally get your hands on the phone. Fixing it will cost you. A lot.
Apple released the new non-warranty service cost information on its site this morning, where it was spotted by MacRumors. The number should give clumsy iPhone owners yet another reason to invest in a heavy duty case for their new premium smartphone: Repairing damage to the iPhone X's screen alone will cost U.S. customers $279, while "Other damage" fees for accidents cost you $549.
You read that right. Apple is charging the equivalent of a brand new iPhone 7, which people are reportedly still enthusiastically buying, to fix up a busted iPhone X.
AppleCare+ is the only thing that will save you from shelling out hundreds of dollars to fix up a thrashed phone. The Apple insurance plan for the iPhone X costs $199 for two years of service and covers two incidents of "accidental damage" at dramatically reduced rates. Each screen repair is $29, while "other damage" costs $99.
The high costs make AppleCare+ even more attractive, and Apple's fight to keep "right to repair" bills off the books all the more frustrating. iPhone X customers are already paying at least a $999 base price for their brand new phone — and unless they pony up and extra $200 for AppleCare+, a busted screen could wind up costing them even more in the future.
