There's only one certainty in the world of Stranger Things: There995 Archivessome strange things going on.
Stranger Things 3is no exception, and even though we've been through portals into an alternate world, seen deadly demogorgons and demodogs, and watched Will Byers get infected by a nasty tentacle monster, the latest season continued to shock and surprise with its bevy of unflinchingly strange new things.
Primarily all the nasty meat creatures.
But there's more than just villainous demon-things that are strange-ing up the place in the latest season. Here are the strangest things from Stranger Things 3.
Deep underground, beneath the Starcourt Mall in Hawkins, Indiana, there exists a Russian facility staffed entirely by Soviet scientists and military personnel. Somehow nobody knows about this facility. Nobody ever noticed what is probably hundreds of Russians coming to Hawkins. Nobody noticed what had to be a ridiculous amount of construction happening to create this facility. Nobody who worked in the mall noticed anything. The only one who seemed to have a clue, outside of the corrupt mayor, was Joyce Byers after she noticed magnets losing their magnetism. Very strange.
At the end of the season, Eleven lost her powers. It's happened before when she's expended a lot of energy and needed to recharge, but her lack of psionic abilities has lasted at least three months. She can't even move a stuffed animal that's like two feet away from her. What happened to her powers, and will she ever get them back? Was it the piece of the mindflayer in her leg that rendered her powerless? Either way, it's strange that they've been gone for so long.
Seeing a bunch of rats scurrying together is never good news, but what the rats in Stranger Things 3are up to is extremely strange. After they get their fill of fertilizer, they lay down, start twitching, and expand until they pop into a gross gooey meat pile. And then they have the audacity to start oozing their way toward a big meat monster. Now that's strange.
The image of the kind old lady Mrs. Driscoll looking up from a bag of fertilizer at Nancy and Jonathan, fertilizer all over her face, is one of the more unsettling moments of Stranger Things 3. Rats eating fertilizer? Not so bad. A human eating fertilizer with that wild look on her face? Very strange.
It's one thing to see rats pop into slimy little meat piles, but watching human characters turn into gooey meat people is so much more disgusting. When the sexist newspaper guys stop trying to kill Nancy and Jonathan and convulse into meat, and thenthey merge together to create a large, vicious meat monster, it's quite a sight. How does the meat stay together? And don't even get me started on the procession of mindless people in the basement of the steel mill turning into goo and merging with the meat monster. It's downright strange.
After Billy gets grabbed by a tentacle, he enters the Upside Down. It turns out that the Upside Down not only contains spooky versions of the real world's environment, it also includes spooky versions of people. Apparently there's a whole population of Upside Down people who are bent on taking over the real world, or are being controlled by the mindflayer to do so. Strange.
All the gooey meat stuff is Stranger Things 3is strange and gross, but one of its worst manifestations is the face-hugging tentacles. The tentacles latch onto people's faces to turn them into a part of the meaty hivemind. It's unclear if the tentacle is leaving something inside of its victims or if it's just creating a psychic link, or possibly switching out the real life version of the person with the Upside Down version. Either way, it's incredibly strange.
SEE ALSO: David Harbour and Winona Ryder react to that shocking 'Stranger Things 3' finaleAll of these nasty, gooey meat rats, people, and tentacles make up one creature: the mindflayer. In the Upside Down, the mindflayer had a dark, smokey quality. But this mindflayer isn't in the Upside Down, it's in the real world, and apparently it's body of choice is made up of inside-out mammals. The meat monster not only takes control of victims and compels them to eat fertilizer and turn into meat goo, it also has complete control of the meat and uses it to grow into a giant, spider-y meat monster. It's terrifying, and the fact that it's trying to take Eleven for some nefarious reason, that's just plain strange.
In a post-credits scene after the season finale of Stranger Things 3, we see inside a different Soviet facility where two people grab a guy and bring him into a cell. Apparently the Soviets have a captured demogorgon and are regularly feeding it prisoners. How did they capture the demogorgon? Why? Why are they feeding it people? The whole thing is strange.
