Hellooo,Dear Utol (2025): My Bilmoko GF Episode 34 2004 is calling, and it is STOKED!
The Wall Street Journalis reporting that Lenovo and Verizon are soon to reboot the iconic aughts Razr flip phone, with a 2019 twist — or should we say.... fold!!!
SEE ALSO: This flexible smartphone unfolds to become a 7.8-inch tabletThe report claims that Lenovo Group, Inc. has teamed up with Verizon as an exclusive partner to sell a new version of the Razr, based on the word of "people familiar with the matter."
The new Razr will be a smart phone, but it will be able to retain its flip phone form because the screen will be a foldable. It will reportedly become available as soon as February (!!!), and cost $1500. Which, ouch. But that's maybe worth it for retro foldable screen glory?
Samsung, u up? Because unlike the foldable phone Samsung finally demoed in late 2018, this might just be a foldable phone people actually want. For better or worse, early aughts nostalgia is everywhere (just look at fashion and TV). So the Razr could be the perfect accessory for teens discovering irony and nostalgic millennials.
The Motorola Razr, which came out in 2004, was the world's best selling cellphone until the iPhone came along in 2007 and stole its thunder, and Motorola's profits. Google acquired Motorola in 2011, and sold off its Motorola Mobility handset business to Lenovo in 2014.
Motorola attempted to reinvent the Razr in 2011 with the Droid Razr M and Razr HD, to little success. It teased a Razr reboot in 2016, but has been mum since. Foldable screen technology finally becoming a reality could be the technological boon the Razr needed to truly stage a come back.
Is this foldable Razr actually coming soon? Verizon declined to comment on "rumors and speculation." Mashable has reached out to Lenovo to confirm the veracity of the Journal'sreport, and will update this story when we hear back.
But in the mean time, flip-happy fingers crossed.
UPDATE: Jan. 17, 2019, 12:47 p.m. EST
A spokesperson for Motorola and Lenovo responded to Mashable's request to learn more with a dang video. The video depicts a shruggie, which is basically a cheeky way of saying "no comment."
